The tide was high around 5:30 pm. The spot where I placed the stone was subject to splashing waves. I waited for the tide to recede and fine-tuned the composition. When the current calmed down, I piled up the stones all at once.

Early in the morning in December, when the sun does not shine all day, the rock faces of this valley look majestic, clad in a thin layer of ice. There is no sense of welcoming serenity here, and the time passes unhurriedly as I quietly acclimatized myself to the place. The space between heaven and earth, where all kinds of things happen, is represented in this work.

The day after the rain, a cool breeze ruffled the leaves on the trees, and the air was chilly on the surface of the river. The light gesture of the leaves responding to the slight movement of the air is reflected in the way the stones are stacked. There are many tadpoles on the banks of the river. They looked so cute as they tried to return to their places by wagging their tails in response to the small waves that came in repeatedly. The parent frogs must have been relieved to see them.

While walking along the river in Okutama, I came upon this place. Because of the continuous rain, the waterfall had spread wide to the sides. I placed the stone in a place where it would not be splashed by water. I waited for the setting sun to shine through the mountains and took this picture.

In the evening, the yellowing leaves and the western sun colors the surface of the river, overlapping each other’s colors. I felt lonely just being here in the midst of eternity, but I knew that a soft light was enveloping the area. Afterwards, I stayed in the river until dark before heading home.

Surrounded by rock walls, this location is backlit only for a few hours in the morning, making the light strong and linear. After that, the sun is hidden by the mountains, so it was necessary to finish the production and shooting in a short time. This work was conceived after location scouting about six months in advance.
