The latest exhibition by Tokyo-based artist Hiroshi Yoshida, “Impermanence”, opens this March in Nakano, Tokyo.

Known for his distinctive practice combining stone, water, and photography, Yoshida explores the fragile balance between natural forces and human intervention. His work centers on rock balancing, creating sculptural forms that exist only momentarily before inevitably collapsing—captured through photography and video as a record of that fleeting equilibrium.

A meditation on transience

“Stone does not move, water does not stay.”

This poetic concept lies at the heart of Impermanence. The exhibition reflects on the ephemeral nature of existence—moments that dissolve as soon as they are formed—inviting viewers to observe and contemplate the delicate tension between stillness and change.

The exhibition features works from Yoshida’s ongoing LandArt series, alongside video pieces and a newly created work titled River Stream.
Through these works, Yoshida presents nature not as a static subject, but as an active collaborator shaped by gravity, water flow, and time.

Live performance

A special live performance will take place during the exhibition, where Yoshida will create his rock balancing works in real time, accompanied by live music from members of the ambient/post-classical group Anoice.

The performance offers a rare opportunity to witness the artist’s process—where creation and collapse exist within the same continuous act.

Hiroshi Yoshida is a Tokyo-based artist working across photography, video, and environmental art. Using natural materials such as stone and water, he creates temporary sculptural forms that explore harmony, gravity, and the passage of time.

His works are not meant to endure—they are instead records of a moment, where balance is achieved only briefly before returning to nature.

This December we had the exciting opportunity to manage the Magnum Photos booth at the 2025 Tokyo Art Book Fair (TABF) — one of the most anticipated art publishing events of the year. The fair took place at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, drawing in art enthusiasts, photographers and collectors from around the world.

Aflo x Magnum Photos: Highlights

Aflo operated the Magnum Photos stand throughout the weekend, featuring:

An exclusive selection of Magnum signed and rare photo books

Prints and merchandise showcasing the legendary collective’s work

A curated display of zines, postcards, and prints from the Aflo Gallery artists

The booth offered visitors a chance to discover iconic photography from Magnum alongside emerging visual voices from Aflo Gallery. A unique blend of global and local photographic culture.

One of the best aspects of the weekend was the opportunity to connect directly with art lovers, collectors, and visitors who stopped by the booth. It was truly inspiring to meet people passionate about photography books, zines, and visual culture.

Visitors responded positively to the mix of historic and contemporary photography, with many discovering new favorites and engaging deeply with the artistic prints and zines on display. This fusion of established icons and emerging talent perfectly reflected TABF’s mission to support diverse publishing voices and creative expression.

What Is the Tokyo Art Book Fair?

The Tokyo Art Book Fair is a celebrated annual festival dedicated to art publishing. Independent zines, photography books, and printed creativity. In 2025 the event reached its 15th edition, showcasing a diverse lineup of exhibitors, talks, workshops, and special programs.

The fair continues to be a cornerstone event for the global art community, bringing together creators and audiences passionate about visual storytelling and printed media.

We had a lot of fun engaging with everyone who visited, and we’re already looking forward to future events where we can continue these conversations and collaborations.

Stay tuned for more updates from Aflo Gallery and upcoming exhibitions, fairs, and artist features!
