The latest exhibition by Tokyo-based artist Hiroshi Yoshida, “Impermanence”, opens this March in Nakano, Tokyo.
Known for his distinctive practice combining stone, water, and photography, Yoshida explores the fragile balance between natural forces and human intervention. His work centers on rock balancing, creating sculptural forms that exist only momentarily before inevitably collapsing—captured through photography and video as a record of that fleeting equilibrium.

A meditation on transience
“Stone does not move, water does not stay.”
This poetic concept lies at the heart of Impermanence. The exhibition reflects on the ephemeral nature of existence—moments that dissolve as soon as they are formed—inviting viewers to observe and contemplate the delicate tension between stillness and change.
The exhibition features works from Yoshida’s ongoing LandArt series, alongside video pieces and a newly created work titled River Stream.
Through these works, Yoshida presents nature not as a static subject, but as an active collaborator shaped by gravity, water flow, and time.

Live performance
A special live performance will take place during the exhibition, where Yoshida will create his rock balancing works in real time, accompanied by live music from members of the ambient/post-classical group Anoice.
The performance offers a rare opportunity to witness the artist’s process—where creation and collapse exist within the same continuous act.

About the Artist

Hiroshi Yoshida is a Tokyo-based artist working across photography, video, and environmental art. Using natural materials such as stone and water, he creates temporary sculptural forms that explore harmony, gravity, and the passage of time.
His works are not meant to endure—they are instead records of a moment, where balance is achieved only briefly before returning to nature.
